In the world of high-end cycling, "bigger is better" has become the mantra for drivetrain efficiency. You see the oversized pulleys everywhere—from the local group ride to the Kona finish line. But as the market for oversized cages has grown, so has the confusion.
When we started Kogel, the goal was never to just make "parts." It was to solve problems. The biggest problem with oversized cages is a dirty little secret most brands don't like to talk about: flex. If you build a giant cage out of thin carbon or plastic to save a few grams, you sacrifice the one thing that actually makes your bike enjoyable to ride—crisp, reliable shifting.
We built the Kolossos family on a foundation of stiffness. Whether you’re looking for a bulletproof daily driver or a wind-cheating weapon, there is a Kolossos designed for your specific road or trail. Here is how we break down the three distinct tiers of the lineup.

1. Kolossos ST: The Heritage Workhorse
The ST (Standard) is the cage that started it all for us six years ago. It was our first foray into the oversized world, and it remains a personal favorite of mine because of its honesty.
When we designed the ST, we made a very deliberate choice to skip the industry trend of injection-molded plastics or sandwiched carbon fiber sheets. We went with 6061 aluminum. Why? Because aluminum allows us to CNC-machine a cage that is significantly stiffer than the stock equivalent.
What I love about this cage: Aside from the mechanical reliability, the ST is where our love for customization began. Because it’s aluminum, we can offer it in a full spectrum of anodized colors. It’s the "pragmatic" choice—you get the reduced chain friction of oversized wheels and the legendary Kogel stiffness, but we use high-quality steel bearings to offer this cage at a great price.
Who is it for? This is for the rider who wants a "set it and forget it" upgrade. If you want a performance gain that you can feel in your shifting accuracy without paying the "ceramic tax," the ST is your cage. It offers about 95% of the performance of our top-tier models but with the bombproof nature of high quality steel bearings. Fun fact: our steel bearings are not off the shelf bearings from a manufacturer catalog, they share all the components with our top of the line CR bearings. Only the ceramic balls are replaced with steel.

2. Speed Kolossos: The Precision Weapon
As bikes evolved—getting more integrated, more aerodynamic, and more specialized—we realized we needed a cage that matched that trajectory. Enter the Speed Kolossos. This is where we transition into our ceramic bearing ecosystem, designed for riders who are hunting for every lost milliwatt of drag.
What I love about this cage: Visually, the Speed Kolossos is stunning. It’s designed to complement the lines of modern aero frames. We kept the stiffness and weight profiles of the original ST but moved to a closed-cage guard. This design change wasn't just to blend in; it opened up a whole new world for Cerakote customization. You can now match your cage to your frame's paint job with a finish that is tougher than anodizing.
The Engineering Reality: One thing we obsessed over was accessibility. Despite the sleeker, more enclosed profile, you still have full access to the pulley wheels. If you’re out on a ride and pick up some road debris or need to do a quick cleaning, you can do this without finger gymnastics. It’s high performance without the high maintenance.
Who is it for? This is the "Everyday Racer." If you’re spending your Saturdays hunting KOMs in the mountains or lining up for a local road race, the Speed Kolossos is the gold standard. It’s the perfect intersection of weight, ceramic efficiency, and that signature Kogel shifting accuracy.

3. Aero Kolossos: The Ultimate Weapon
The Aero Kolossos has one of my favorite "happy accident" backstories in Kogel history. When we first conceptualized this cage, the design was so complex we didn't think we could machine it. We actually intended for it to be 3D printed.
When the first prototypes arrived, the 3D-printed versions looked... well, terrible. They were rough and lacked the premium feel we demand. However, our manufacturer had tucked a CNC-machined version into the same box just to see if it could be done. The level of detail on that machined model blew me away. It was a work of art that also happened to be an aerodynamic shield for your pulley wheels.
What I love about this cage: It’s unapologetic. It isn't just a cage; it’s an aerodynamic construction. Since fairings are illegal under UCI rules, the aero features and the stiffness are all from the same two shells.
Who is it for? This is for the high-speed specialists. We’re talking about:
-
Triathletes and Ironman competitors: When you’re on the bike for 112 miles, saving a handful of watts through aero efficiency and ceramic bearings adds up to seconds or minutes off your finishing time.
-
Crit Racers and Miami-style Group Rides: When the pace is pinned at 28mph (45kph) or higher, aero drag becomes your primary obstacle. In these scenarios, the Aero Kolossos isn't just an upgrade; it’s an unfair advantage.
Finding Your Fit
Choosing the right Kolossos comes down to how you ride and what you value most in your gear.

At the end of the day, all three models share the same Kogel DNA. They are built to be the stiffest cages on the market because we refuse to sacrifice shifting quality for the sake of oversized pulleys. We’ve solved the mechanical hurdles of the "big wheel" trend; now, you just have to choose your speed.
Ride on!
